How to Take the Challenge
What is the QIA?
The Quick Impact Assessment (QIA) is an eye-opening practice that focuses on the impact local businesses have on their employees, the community, the environment, and their relationships with other local businesses. It allows business owners to evaluate their business strengths, where there is room to improve and how the business stacks up against others. Simply take the QIA online, which will only require approximately 30 minutes to complete.
The QIA was developed and is administered in its entirety by B Lab, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves a global movement of entrepreneurs using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Lab envisions that all businesses in the world will measure and manage their impact as readily as they do profitability.
Why is this important to my business?
Businesses are the largest change agent in the local movement of change. Obtaining solid information on independent businesses illustrates the ability of businesses to not only generate returns, but also to create value for customers, employees, community, and the environment. As a group, we are redefining success in business by acknowledging the companies that are using it as a force for good.
How do I complete the assessment and access the Snapshot Report?
After selecting “Take the challenge”, register your name and email address, and navigate through the initial questions by selecting the circle with the check mark. Once completing registration, you will land on a Dashboard page. From there, you can navigate, using the left-hand panel, to “ASSESSMENTS”, “REPORTS”, and “TOOLS”. Select “ASSESSMENTS” followed by “Quick Impact Assessment”. Begin by selecting “Instructions” from the list.
Following the instructions, you will be guided to complete the assessment by answering questions within 5 categories. Within each question, you can select “Explain This” or “Show Example” to better understand the question.
Upon completing all questions, navigate to the left-hand panel and select “REPORTS” and then navigate to “Snapshot Report”. The “Snapshot Report” shows how your company’s responses to each question compare to other businesses.
You may also download a PDF version of the report by navigating back to the Dashboard landing page and navigating to the “Assessments” box on the center right hand side. Click on the 3 vertical dots on the right-hand side on the dated entry line for your assessment and select “Download PDF”.
What will I need to prepare before completing the QIA?
Nothing. For your first (baseline) Assessment, we recommend that you provide estimates for each answer and mark questions as “Revisit This” if you are unsure about your answer; you will find that this is the easiest way to complete and still get a rough B Impact Score.
Thereafter, it may be helpful to use the following to assist you in answering questions:
– Company’s financials. It may be helpful to have either a Profit & Loss Statement or your accounting system (e.g. Quickbooks) open.
– Vendor Ledger with amount spent in the 12 months. This will help you answer many questions related to Suppliers.
– Product bill of materials or Client/Project list from the past 12 months. This may help answer many questions in the “Impact Business Models” section.
What if I have more questions about completing the QIA?
B Lab, the administrators of the QIA, maintains a robust set of FAQs to help guide you through common questions about the assessment including methodology, scoring, and standards.

What happens after I take the QIA?
After completing the assessment and navigating to the “Snapshot Report”, you will be able to view your results and how they compare to other businesses’ results. Left-hand tabs on the Dashboard menu under “IMPROVEMENT” will help to guide you through your results and how you can set goals and improve your performance. Clearinghouse CDFI staff is also available to help you set and reach goals in areas where your business would like to improve.
We want to distinguish businesses who are taking the first step to improvement and who are working to improve their impact. We know it takes time and effort to build a better business, so we want to reward and celebrate your achievements. If you share the results of your assessment with Clearinghouse CDFI, then we will feature your businesses in our next Benefit/Impact Report.
